- Pre School
-
Pre school programs are offered for ages 3-5. There are no
fees for these activities. Generally programs stress early
childhood development with an emphasis on both fine and gross motor
skills.
- Youth
-
Activities for youth ages 6-17 focus on individual and team
sports. Emphasis is placed on socialization skills through a
variety of programs that encourage good sportsmanship and
communication. Through these activities youth are afforded the
opportunity to fine tune their leisure time into productive and
acceptable group
behaviors.
- Adults
-
Programs for adults encourage healthy lifestyles with classes
in the popular exercise regimens such as yoga, Tai-Bo and aerobics as
well as league sports. Special seasonal craft workshops and day trips
round out the adult leisure menu.
- Seniors
-
An extensive array of activities are provided for senior
citizens. Again, health and fitness for the older population is
enhanced through such activities as yoga, Tai Chi Ch'uan, tennis
lessons, bowling, tap and line dancing, golf, swimming,and exercise
classes. For the less active senior, passive activities
including oil painting, decorative crafts, sewing and the ever popular
day trips serve to complete the roster.
- Special Needs
-
The Department is one of the very few in the state of Rhode
Island to provide year round recreational activities for individuals
who are physically and/or mentally challenged. A seven week
summer day camp for youth is offered at no cost to residents.
Adults have the opportunity to participate on a weekly basis in
programs that encompass passive and active leisure arts. There
is no fee to engage in these activities. The Department offers
door- to- door transportation for all special needs programs and our
21 passenger bus is wheelchair accessible. A medical release
form is required.
